This coin features the Green Turtle (chelonian mydas), one of the four species of giant sea turtle to be found in the Caribbean Sea around Cayman. The turtle has particular significance to the Cayman Islands because of our original name "Las Tortugas", the Spanish name for turtles, so called because of the bountiful supply found in our coastal water by the early explorers.
In these days of concern regarding our threatened environment, it is heartening to note that the Cayman Islands Turtle Farm (a government sponsored research facility), not only studies and successfully breeds the Green Turtle, but releases many hatchlings back into the ocean, thus increasing the long term survival of the species.
The lovely design is featured on the reverse of the $1 coin which is struck in lustrous sterling silver. The obverse bears the regal portrait of Her Majesty the Queen by sculptor Raphael Maklouf.
