On becoming Queen in 1837, Victoria was the youngest sovereign Queen in British history and continued to reign for the longest period of any monarch.
This was the time of the Industrial Revolution, and the forming of an Empire; Queen Victoria ruled during many of Britain's greatest achievements in history, and her death brought to an end not only a great reign but also the end of an era.
Much of her life was spent mourning the death of her husband and consort, Albert, whose influence had molded her political opinions, guided her judgment and left the stamp of his conservative outlook indelibly on history.
The obverse of the coin features the famous Arnold Machin portrait of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II, celebrating her Silver Jubilee in 1977.
