Paralegal (Litigation)


Reporting to Legal Counsel (Litigation) (“LC”), the Paralegal (Litigation) provides general legal, secretarial support and administrative services ensuring effective and efficient operations of the Litigation Division, which manages all legal disputes involving the Authority. The Paralegal (Litigation) will also be responsible for supporting the Division’s litigation procedures and assisting with the management and maintenance of the Division’s filing system, reference materials and precedents.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will:

  • Support the LC and Junior Legal Counsel (“JLC”) in the review of pre-action protocol letters and preliminary assessments to determine the issues in dispute.
  • Contribute to detailed legal research and analysis including reviews of relevant legislation, regulations, and case law to determine how the legal principles and applicable laws apply to (potential) litigation cases.
  • Assist with preparing correspondence and documents (including letters, summons, affidavits, applications, submissions, etc.) while maintaining meticulous attention to detail.
  • Organise/maintain all records in an efficient filing system and the Division’s library of reference materials and precedents.
  • Facilitate the appropriate filing of legal documents, either electronically or manually, by following appropriate procedures, including preparing the documents in the required format and submitting them to the Court.
  • Assist with drafting of orders following Court decisions, ensuring all relevant information is included, filing orders with the Court, supporting the JLC to file cost claims after a Court judgement is handed down.
  • Prepare and maintain meeting minutes for all litigation related meetings and court attendance notes.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Paralegal or legal secretary qualification such as a certificate, diploma or degree from an accredited institution or equivalent experience is required.
  • A law degree is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience working as a paralegal in a law firm with at least 3 years’ experience supporting a litigation department including legal research, drafting, bundle preparation, correspondence, and Court filings.
  • Experience working in the Cayman Islands including working knowledge of regulatory laws, rules, and procedures governing CIMA would be an asset.
  • Strong planning, organisational and time management skills with the ability to work on own initiative, efficiently manage multiple competing priorities and pressing deadlines concurrently.
  • Technically proficient in common office software such as MS Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), to prepare and manage legal documents and data efficiently.
