Head - Investments Supervision Division
Pranav H. Variava was appointed Head of the Investments Supervision Division (‘ISD’) at the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (‘CIMA’) on December 1, 2023. With a track record of effective leadership and regulatory expertise, he previously served as Deputy Head of the ISD since joining CIMA in January 2023, where he was instrumental in advancing regulatory practices and driving innovation within the division.
In his current role, Mr. Variava leads the strategic oversight of Cayman Islands' investment funds and fund administrators, ensuring their adherence to the highest standards of regulatory compliance. His leadership is defined by a forward-thinking approach that integrates both traditional and progressive methods of supervision. His role involves providing strategic direction to enhance supervision frameworks, streamline operational processes, and strengthen CIMA's regulatory oversight. He is responsible for both on-site and off-site monitoring of licensees and registrants, as well as managing enforcement actions when necessary. With a clear focus on operational excellence, he continuously refines CIMA’s supervision frameworks, promoting transparency and trust within the global financial ecosystem.
With years of experience spanning financial services regulation, policy development, and capital markets oversight, Mr. Variava is a recognized thought leader in the industry. His expertise encompasses regulatory due diligence, risk-based supervision, financial modeling, corporate finance, valuation, compliance, surveillance, forensic investigations, ESG, and combatting financial crime. His multifaceted expertise enables him to anticipate industry shifts and adapt regulatory approaches that meet evolving global standards. His leadership is rooted in a deep commitment to protecting market integrity while fostering sustainable growth.
Mr. Variava’s academic credentials include a Master’s in Management Studies (Finance) and a Master’s in Wealth Management, alongside a Bachelor’s in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering. His professional credentials as a Chartered Financial Analyst (‘CFA’), Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (‘CAMS’), and Financial Risk Manager (‘FRM’) in addition to numerous other certifications reflect his dedication to continuous learning and excellence in the financial sector.
