The Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (“CIMA” or “the Authority”), in partnership with Scottsdale Mint, is proud to unveil the latest additions to the Cayman Islands Numismatic Coin Collection with the 2024 Sea Life Programme. These 1 oz .999 silver bullion coins feature a Marlin, a Turtle, and a Stingray on the reverse, with the Cayman Islands Coat of Arms depicted on the obverse of all three coins.
The Marlin Coin:
A legendary denizen of the deep, the Marlin holds a special place in the maritime lore of the Cayman Islands.
This majestic creature, known for its strength and speed, graces the waters surrounding the Cayman Islands. With its elongated body, distinctive bill-like snout, and a dorsal fin that stretches skyward, the Marlin is a marvel of marine evolution. Beyond its role in sportfishing, the Marlin is deeply rooted in Caymanian culture, symbolizing the untamed spirit of the Caribbean waters. It captivates the imagination of locals and visitors alike.
Currently listed as a threatened species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature due to overfishing, the Marlin is a focus of sustainable fishing practices in the Cayman Islands. As a major sportfishing destination, the islands actively promote eco-tourism and conservation initiatives, including a “catch and release” program. The Marlin's portrayal in the Cayman Islands' imagery, including on coins, pays homage to its indomitable strength and beauty.
The Turtle Coin:
A stunning tribute to one of the most iconic marine creatures of the Cayman Islands, the Turtle Coin highlights the islands' rich marine heritage.
When Christopher Columbus discovered the Cayman Islands in 1503, he named them "Las Tortugas" due to the abundance of sea turtles in the surrounding waters. Over the years, turtles became integral to the local culture and economy, though heavy harvesting in the 18th and 19th centuries led to a drastic population decline. Recognizing the need for conservation, the Cayman Islands have since implemented strong measures to protect these creatures, transforming the Turtle into a symbol of marine conservation.
Today, the Cayman Islands are global leaders in marine conservation, with extensive efforts to protect and nurture turtle populations. The Department of Environment, alongside non-profits, actively monitors nesting sites and implements protective measures to ensure the turtles' survival. The Turtle’s story of survival and recovery reflects the resilience of the Cayman Islands and its people.
The Stingray Coin:
Celebrating the grace and importance of Cayman Islands marine life, the Stingray Coin showcases one of the most enchanting creatures of the ocean.
Known for their graceful movements and unique, flat bodies, stingrays are symbolic of the Cayman Islands' vibrant coral reefs and pristine waters. The Stingray has become an emblem of the islands, representing the delicate balance of marine ecosystems and the vital importance of conservation.
Stingrays have long been a part of the Cayman Islands' history and culture, inhabiting the shallow waters of the islands for centuries. One of the most famous locations is Stingray City, a renowned sandbar where locals and tourists can interact with and feed the gentle Southern Stingrays (Dasyatis americana). This interaction has fostered a deep appreciation for these remarkable creatures.
